Born in Uleytokpo, Sonam Wangchuk navigated early educational challenges, inspiring his lifelong commitment to reforming learning systems in the Himalayas. His journey led to the founding of Operation New Hope in 1994, a movement to make education relevant to local context.

This initiative focused on empowering students and teachers to create a curriculum that resonated with the unique environment and cultural heritage of Ladakh, fostering self-reliance and practical skills.

HIAL Founding

In 1988, Wangchuk founded SECMOL (Students' Educational and Cultural Movement of Ladakh), transforming the educational landscape for Ladakhi youth.

Building on SECMOL's success, Operation New Hope was launched in 1994, empowering students to pass exams and engage in community development.

The groundbreaking Ice Stupa project began in 2014, pioneering artificial glaciers for water conservation in the arid mountain desert.

In 2016, the Himalayan Institute of Alternatives, Ladakh (HIAL) was established, a university focused on practical, context-relevant learning.
